Moreover, such a mindset has advantages for us as well i.e. it'd be easier to get the buy-in from the clients if they can envision our process as clearly as we do. Our simple claim to our clients in the first call is that we take your idea as the input. Then offer you a validated design as the output of our work only within 4 weeks.
We often hear two typical Reactions
A) "Oh that's too long"
Clients as such rightfully wish to arrive at answers quicker. Often they face budget or time constraints. Interestingly enough they often have heard of Design Sprint or are in talks with another agency that offers them a week process instead of four.
B) "Oh that's too fast"
For this camp, it'd usually take much longer to develop and test an idea. Some of them work for organizations that their processes are slower than that of a startup. Also, for others in this camp, who are big believers of research, a four-week research process is not enough.
???? What's common amongst both camps, that in response to our claim, they'd usually show a mixture of surprise, excitement, and doubt.
Before we break down our process let's resolve some tensions you might have
WHY CAN'T YOU RUN A WEEK OF DESIGN SPRINT?
A Design Sprint is a process and each process needs an input (= an idea). If you don't verify the input scientifically with the market, then you cannot rely on the output of it.
This is often the mistake that teams make. Often they wrestle with few ideas and haven't systematically validated them with the market. And they take the ideas to Design Sprint and hope for magic to occur. It won't sadly!
Design Sprint is only a process by which you can achieve certain results and it has its limitations.
WHY DOESN'T THIS PROCESS TAKE LONGER? IT USUALLY IS IN OUR ORGANIZATION.
We grew up in an agile environment and are a big believer in breaking down the complexity into small, manageable chunks. On top of that, we love running short, effective experiments by which we can gain valuable insights. We use the valuable insights to course-correct our path and then if necessary, to conduct more experiments.
It's a long detour to answer this question but well needed. Of course, we conduct research as long as it takes but we don't kickstart the project if we don't define clear constraints. Without constraints, motivation tanks and the project mission fades away behind the long length of time.
The Bonanza Design Innovation Process is a 4-week process. Our attempt to place reasonable constraints on the process of research and validation and arrive at actionable insights by the end of it.
Can you run this process remotely?
Although, we love human interactions and physical workshops. We're a remote-first organization by nature. Meaning that we can conduct the process both for onsite and remote settings.
Is this a linear process?
NO. If you look into nature, there's no straight line. Hence our process is built with iteration in mind. What you see is a simplified version of a detailed process with feedback loops in place to address the complexity of designing a new product and service.
